Reviews

This is a solid introduction to the plight of refugees, displaced individuals, and asylum seekers. A historical overview begins with the Huguenots in seventeenth-century France (the first time the term refugee was used) and is current through the Ukraine conflict. The straightforward, accessible text cites situations all over the world, and reviews reasons for mass dislocations, including war, famine, and ethnic cleansing. Ongoing challenges are identified, including perilous journeys, overcrowded conditions in refugee camps, changing legislation and national sentiment, and the arduous process of applying for asylum or citizenship. Three former refugees are profiled (an Olympian, a philanthropist, and a poet), and arresting full-color photos and sidebars appear on almost every page. Researchers will appreciate the helpful back matter. A worthwhile and timely selection from the Odysseys in Recent Events series (6 titles).

This informative series provides essential research material on global events from recent decades. Each topic is placed in historical context; for example, the author asks readers to consider Martin Luther’s theses as “going viral” while discussing social media, and gives background material about refugee crises and destructive storms while explaining those subjects. The text is information-heavy, but surrounded by plenty of white space, full-page photos, and sidebars, all of which help to break up the text. The accompanying photos are expertly chosen to grab readers’ attention and bring moments in history to life. The books include a glossary, bibliography, and index. VERDICT This is excellent research material for current events.
