Readers explore the rhino’s appearance, behavior, and habitat with STEM-appropriate text and gorgeous photography. An end folk tale from Africa shares why rhinos have bumpy skin. A great nonfiction resource for student reports, animal units, and life science lessons. Includes table of contents, index, same-page definitions, and further resources.

Reviews

Imagine a calf weighing anywhere from fifty-five to one hundred pounds at birth. Such is the case with rhino babies. This book provides a good overview of this endangered species, including its physical features, diet, habit, and behaviors. It also touches on why it is endangered and its symbiotic relationship with the oxpecker. Content vocabulary terms appear in bold print, and the definitions are provided on the lower portion of the page. Close-up color photographs found throughout the book provide moderate support for the text; captions provide some additional information. A summary of the African folktale about the rhino’s skin is shared. Teachers will want to include this book (and the series) in their science unit on animals and use the folktale to initiate a cross-curricular lesson. No content consultant is listed. Includes a list of a few books and websites for further exploration; the list of websites includes a short summary for each. This book is one of several in the “Amazing Animals” series, which include flamingos, tortoises, geckos, vultures, whales, and more.
