The Creative Company is an independent, family-owned and operated children’s book publishing company located in North Mankato, Minnesota. The Creative Company, which includes the divisions Creative Education, Creative Editions, Amicus, Amicus Ink, and Black Rabbit Books, has been creating dynamic, beautiful, innovative, award-winning books for children for more than 90 years. Our expansive list of titles offers selections for readers from toddlers to high schoolers.

The Creative Company is seeking a full-time editor to join our fast-paced, challenging, and creative team. We offer a work environment with on-the-job training, casual work attire, and a commitment to quality.

The Editor position is an integral part of The Creative Company’s book development team. From popular topics like sports and animals to in-depth looks at technology and social issues, our editors are versatile enough to work on a wide variety of subjects and comfortable working with authors to ensure accurate, understandable text. This position requires great attention to detail and project management skills. It also requires a keen ability to edit text to various reading levels; copy edit for grammar, punctuation, and organization; and fact-check for accuracy.

The editor’s tasks will include:

  • editing approximately 60 titles per year.
  • working with authors to develop content, voice, and reading level.
  • editing the manuscripts for level, content, and accuracy.
  • providing direction to graphic designers about features to be included in the books.
  • providing feedback on photos to designers.
  • copy editing layouts for grammar, punctuation, and other errors.
  • observing and meeting established production schedule deadlines.
  • reviewing press proofs from printers.
  • writing and proofreading marketing copy to support our books, including series and book annotations, eblasts, metadata, and other marketing copy as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain regular work-week schedule.
  • Work under supervision, as well as independently and collaboratively as needed, and be willing to accept feedback.
  • Perform during times of increased workload.
  • Set deadlines and conscientiously strive to meet or beat them.
  • Manage multiple job functions simultaneously.

Requirements

  • 4-year degree in English, Journalism, or related field
  • superior editorial judgment, time management, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • a love for children’s books and a drive to create great content for young readers
  • proficient in Microsoft Office
  • intimate with Mac operating environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1–3 years editorial or book publishing experience
  • Familiar with Adobe Acrobat and Adobe InDesign
  • Pay based on experience
