Reviews

Although Earth has always had the same amount of water, according to this installment in theOdysseys in the Environment series (6 titles), it’s running out of clean fresh water.Straightforward, balanced text helps students examine global water concerns. The book beginswith chapters on the water cycle and human water consumption around the world andprogresses to human-induced impacts on and threats to clean water, plus numerous initiatives torestore clean water and wetlands and reduce water consumption. Full-page, high-quality colorphotos provide breaks in the text and examples of water sources, water usage, and effects ofhuman activity. Short, intermittent stories add related information about topics such asPlayPumps in Africa that function as both merry-go-rounds for children and water pumps for thecommunity. The book’s concise coverage will serve student researchers well.

Each title covers current challenges facing the modern world today. Starting with a detailed table of contents the topics are introduced, then further broken down by what challenges are faced, what the future looks like, how readers can support the causes to make the situation better, and if there is an end in sight...There are red tabs that read ‘opposite’ and sometimes state a conflict or quick fact, along with gray takeaways, showing how nuance and complexity exist within each topic. Every chapter also connects the new information to readers and how they can change what they do to help the environment. For example, The War on Waste covers the decades-long plan to turn New York City’s Fresh Kills Landfill into a park...[T]he photographs that are used have a great impact. The back matter includes a selected bibliography, endnotes/glossary, websites to visit, and an index. VERDICT A slightly dense, but still important, series on current challenges we face today.

After air, the most important necessity for life is water. Each person needs a specific amount to survive daily; but, many place on Earth don’t allow persons what is needed. In North America, it is believed each of us uses over 100 gallons per day, including washing clothes, taking long showers, flushing, even keeping the water running while brushing our teeth. But, with all the water we see on this planet, only three percent is fresh. The rest, salt water, cannot be used for our needs. There are many examples of places all over the world where water is not treated like the very important factor needed. Large dams are meant to supply regions with clean water, but some actually emit large amounts of methane, which contributes to global warming; some farms and manufacturers dump chemicals into water supplies; some water can become so contaminated that it can cause many forms of illness, such as typhoid and diarrhea. Even in the United States, there are areas where not enough water is available for farming, resulting in a loss of food. On the other hand, flooding can cause populations to have to leave their homes. To help in that, reservoirs have been built, but that can have people moving to allow room for construction. Water is a terrible problem all over the world. There is all together too little water for the numbers of people. In some places, drastic measures must be used. This book, which states the necessity for water for all, is a must read. Everyone should have a copy of this, and continue to read it as a reminder of how important the world needs to conserve water, and keep it fresh for all.
