The illustrated “Super Bowl Champions" series provides elementary-aged readers with an introduction to some of the most successful and storied professional football teams ever to participate in the National Football League (NFL). Each volume in this series provides readers with background information about the history of these championship teams, some of the franchises’ greatest players, and just how they were able to capture what is perhaps the most coveted championship trophy in the pantheon of North American professional sports. In this Spanish language selection from the “Campeones del Super Bowl” series, readers are presented with the story of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs were originally known as the Dallas Texans, and the team was one of the original members of the fledgling American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the Chiefs relocated to Kansas City, Missouri where they have remained to the present day. In 1966, a deal between the AFL and NFL began to take shape, and it was decided that an inter-league championship game would be part of the negotiated agreement and eventual merger. The first of these inter-league championship games took place in January of 1967 and featured the NFL champion Green Bay Packers versus the AFL champs, the Kansas City Chiefs. While the Chiefs were badly beaten in what would come to be known as the first Super Bowl, they rebounded and won the Super Bowl in 1970. The Chiefs won a second Super Bowl in 2020, led by their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Over the past fifty years, the Chiefs have been led by such stars as Len Dawson, Otis Taylor, Travis Kelce, Derrick Thomas, Tony Gonzalez, and Buck Buchanan. The Chiefs have also been led by such highly esteemed head coaches as Hank Stram and Andy Reid. The story of this dynamic professional football team is well told in this concise and amply illustrated sports book. Youngsters interested in professional football will enjoy this book and the parent series to which it belongs.
