"Did you know military canines can exit a hovering helicopter by sliding down a rope with their SEAL Team Six operator? See a photo of the military dog in mid-air and learn numerous SEAL facts in this educational resource. SEAL Team Six's creation, definitions, locations of several operations, extensive training, specialized gear, unit renaming and squadron nicknames, and the the focus of each squadron are all covered within the text. The Top Five SEAL Team Six Achievements section includes info about a military dog that aided in a successful operation, the SEAL who has served on active duty the longest, the SEAL who received the Medal of Honor for a successful rescue of an American kidnapped overseas, the recruitment, selection and training of SEALs, and the qualifications required to become a SEAL. Although the content is exciting and interesting, it does include “Hell Week” as well as information about “kill-house training” and a description of recruits having a hood over their head and their response to the situation once the hood is removed. Adults are encouraged to review content prior to sharing with elementary students, especially in a school setting. Readers are introduced to the various elite forces in the United States military in these ten titles. Facts provided include the specific duties of each group: for instance, Air Force Special Opps Command conducts secret rescue missions, the Special Operations Aviation Regminent—nicknamed the Night Stalkers—rescue hostages with helicopters, and Navy SEALS conduct maritime operations where diving is involved. The origin of each unit is included; two examples are that the Army Rangers descend from the Rogers Rangers of the French and Indian War, and Marine Force Recon was established in 1957. Where each force is headquartered and a brief overview of personnel and operations are also featured, as are colorful photographs to complement the narratives. The information related is good and comprehensive enough for the targeted reading levels ... These books will appeal to those with an intense interest in military operations ...
