The 12 lines of Millay’s 1917 poem provide the whole text for this glorious nature outing. “I will be the gladdest thing / Under the sun!” opens the adventure, as the anonymous first-person narrator runs over grassy hills wearing a short-sleeved calico dress and sneakers. The poem can be read literally as realism, but in the illustrations, a fantasy realm grows. When the lines say “I will touch a hundred flowers / And not pick one,” a single flower grows to the scale of a sapling. The heads of massive birds peer out from between trees, their eyes intense and just this side of ominous. A forest, from a long view, is shaped like an animal, absorbing (not reflecting) sunlight, even while the narrator’s peachy skin glows with reflected sun. When the poem lets the protagonist “[w]atch the wind bow down the grass, / And the grass rise,” the grass becomes a horizontally billowing ocean for the child to windsurf on, standing upright on an enormous leaf, arms outstretched, hair streaming. The illustrations are all full-bleed spreads; each has a different light. Domeniconi offsets acute, scientific-feeling, almost overpowering visual details on flowers and birds against vague, generic skies and distant trees. At dusk, lights glow in the distant town, and the narrator beds down—nestled in the antlers of a mighty animal, possibly an elk. Romantic and bracing.

–Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review), February 1, 2019

Ages 6 - 10

Fiction, 16 pages, 2019

ISBN 978-1-56846-334-6

This collection of 21 poems offers perspectives on the ever-changing stages of human life, framed by the famous "Seven Ages of Man" monologue in William Shakespeare's As You Like It.

    Reviews

What a smashing book. Surrealistic illustrations reminiscent of Magritte and Escher create intriguing settings.

–The Horn Book , March 2014

Poet and anthologist Hopkins uses the 7 stages in the famous "Seven Ages of Man" monologue from William Shakespeare's As You Like It as the framework for a collection of 21 poems reflecting on the journey of life. The varied selections range from a traditional Nigerian lullaby and works by Walt Whitman and Lewis Carroll to two poems by Hopkins himself. Each stage is represented by three poems and introduced with a mannered yet surreal double-page illustration framed by columns suggesting a theater, as well as the first few words from Shakespeare's monologue that are specific to the segment. The pages with the poems are artistically balanced, featuring text in a small, plain font and one or two illustrations against a stark white background. Each of the illustrations, symbolic in nature, have only one or two small characters placed in a vast expanse of space, exuding a sense of coldness and loneliness that is often in contrast to the tenderness of the poems; "Act Four's War" is particularly heart-wrenching. Though somewhat slight, this is thought-provoking, beautifully designed, and enjoyable.

–Randall Enos, Booklist , December 2013

Like the old man's house, Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man" speech is "a world too wide" to be well-served by this paltry selection of 21 poems, three per "age." Hopkins tries to inject some color into the mix with Walt Whitman's "When I heard the learn'd astronomer," Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "How do I love thee?" and Lewis Carroll's "You are old, father William." Unfortunately, these, combined with passages from the speech itself, only make his other choices look anemic. To the "infant,/Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms," for instance, Rebecca Kai Dotlich offers a bland "Amazing, your face./Amazing"; on the facing page, a "traditional Nigerian lullaby" is stripped of music: "Sleep my baby near to me./Lu lu lu lu lu lu." Along with Joan Bransfield Graham's "A Soldier's Letter to a Newborn Daughter," which ends with a condescending "I'm coming home/to my girls"/With All My Love,/DAD," most of the rest are cast in prosaic free verse. Hopkins' "Curtain," probably written for this collection closes the set with theatrical imagery. Billout supplies pale, distant views of small figures and some surreal element in largely empty settings–appropriate, considering the poetry, but they lack either appeal for young audiences or any evocation of the Shakespearean lines' vigorous language and snarky tone. A poor performance, "[s]ans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything."

        –Kirkus , September 2013

Building from Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man" monologue from As You Like It, Hopkins organizes this collection of poetry according to the seven ages, labeling them "Entrances," "Childhood," "Love," "War," "Adulthood," "Aged," and "Exits" and allotting three poems for each. Every section opens with a spread of a theater with each life stage portrayed inside, beginning with "At first the infant," and taking readers through to the "Last Scene" stae. The stark, surreal art delivers small bites of emotion and symbolism. The 21 selections come from a range of poets, mixing Walt Whitman and Lewis Carroll with modern children's poets such as Janet S. Wong and Kate Coombs. The unique concept behind this book allows readers to look at both the monologue and the poetry in a new way. While the picture book trim size suggests younger readers, the content will resonate most for those with more life experience to bring to it. The lyrical text is both beautiful and hard-hitting, providing a loose timeline of events and experiences from the men's recruitment through their training in the Jim Crow South, disappointing grunt work overseas, and their courage and tenacity when finally embedded with French troops fighting the Germans. But this is a story of music, too. Many of the soldiers were recruited by bandleader James Europe. Some were fine musicians, who brought the sound of Harlem across the ocean. Fluid, somber-toned pastel drawings depict the desolation and add emotional depth, as when the regiment sails to France and passes a ghostly slave ship in the night. One of the brightest spots in the art is a picture of a piano Europe found in a French farmhouse where he composed songs. This is a powerful tribute. Central to Lewis's narrative is bandleader Lt. James Europe, who turned his talents to writing patriotic songs and leading a military band that brought jazz to an eagerly receptive French audience. Short poems and prose pieces, arranged according to wartime chronology, appear in boxes inserted into spreads broken into blocks of illustration, creating an impressionistic take on the war. Although Lewis's imagery is frequently evocative ("The moon took cover / in a bunker of clouds"; "Townsfolk knocked back glasses of liberation with free beer chasers"), the fusion of poetry and prose is awkward, and the segues between topics are abrupt and unfocused. Kelley's grainy, earth-toned illustrations are outstanding, often stepping into command when the text stumbles. The troop transport that passes a ghost slave ship in the foggy Atlantic is visually arresting (though it could benefit from textual support); faces of Frenchmen swaying to "Jim Europe's pizzazz jazz 'Marseillaise'" are eerie, puppet-like figures dancing at the fin du monde; a pair of lynched black bodies bookend a bullet-torn helmet atop a rifle, contrasting the predicaments of the Hellfighters and their brothers back home. Each soldier, whether serious or smiling, gazes out at readers to introduce a story about all the ways the country for which they willingly fought still systematically discriminates against them, even during wartime. Like these seemingly disconnected portraits at the beginning, episodic vignettes tell the story of how James "Big Jim" Reese Europe used music to motivate his troops under nearly insurmountable conditions; how the Harlem Hellfighters were often relegated to menial "grunt work" jobs instead of being sent into battle, and how lynchings persisted at home despite their war efforts abroad. In the story's most haunting image, the ship on which the soldiers sail passes through the ghostly images of slaves wearing neck shackles, reminding readers that the Middle Passage still affected these black men in 1917. The narrative gaps and Lewis's focus on so many individuals and situations make this a work that packs an emotional rather than an informational punch; it's best when used to supplement a more extensive study of the Harlem Hellfighters. The 15th New York National Guard. The Men of Bronze. The Black Rattlers. The Harlem Hellfighters. They went by many names, the 2,000 black American soldiers, inspired by musician James "Big Jim" Reese Europe, who made history in World War I. They are the subject of a handsome new biography, written by J. Patrick Lewis, former U.S. Children's Poet Laureate, and illustrated by acclaimed artist Gary Kelley. After explaining that the U.S. entered World War I later than other countries, Lewis goes on to lay out how it is that this particular group of black soldiers came together. In the state of New York, politicians asked bandleader James Europe to help assemble a new regiment of black soldiers in Harlem. "And the cavalcade was on." The soldiers were sent to train in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in the summer of 1917, facing great discrimination in a part of the country teeming with racism. Lewis writes that the soldiers soon asked themselves "whether German bullets could be as fatal as the rifle eyes of Southern gentry, women--highborn or down-and-out--triggered to rage, ministers sold on buckshot salvation, and deputy sheriffs certain that black was not any color of the rainbow." On the voyage across the sea to Germany and while being moored in France, Jim and his boys played their "pizzazz jazz." Lewis goes on to note their work (at first they were assigned the same "grunt work" they'd have been given at home, as opposed to fighting on the front lines, all because of their skin color), as well as their success in a city in the Alps in 1918, where they found fame playing jazz. He notes their major battles and even includes a tribute to Henry Johnson, a.k.a. "Black Death" Johnson, who was given France's highest military honor for fighting valiantly in a battle that took his life. On one chilling page, author and illustrator pause to note what was happening "back home" in the U.S. South: lynchings (Kelley doesn't shy from their horror in his illustrations) and rampant discrimination. Jim Europe was still able to write songs and perform, Lewis notes; on one spread a "cobwebbed piano" sits in a field of flowers, Lewis noting in the text that Europe wrote his most famous song, "On Patrol in No Man's Land," while recovering from a gas attack. The book closes with their New York City homecoming but includes the "tally," the lives lost, the damage done. Lewis even documents Jim's death, when back home, at the hands of a "mad drummer with a tripwire temper." He was the first black man ever to receive a public funeral in New York with the "hushed instruments" of the Hellfighters marching by his casket. In what can be best described as free-verse vignettes, Lewis writes with a piercing and moving precision about the work of the Hellfighters, capturing moments with evocative figurative language. "The band served honey through a horn to war-weary dough-boys on leave," he writes. They "turned listeners' bones to liquid--cymbal-cornet-clarinet clash coursing in the blood." Lewis is a gifted writer, and the book's closing bibliography shows he did his research as well. Kelley's textured pastel illustrations are beautifully realized, rich and brooding. He puts panels to effective use and doesn't shy from the horrors of war, making this a great picture book for use with older readers. (High school teachers and librarians, take note.) Many panels show men and action in deep shadow, only to be followed by panels that capture light brilliantly and vividly. This is one to pore over. (Lewis and Kelley also brought us And the Soldiers Sang, a 2012 Boston Globe Horn Book Honor title. Good things happen when they collaborate.) A compelling book that tells a little-known story of American history and a dramatic tale of warfare, it's a fascinating story for music- and history-lovers alike.

–Julie Danielson, Kirkus Reviews , 8/1/2014

On February 17, 1919, the 369th Infantry Regiment returned to New York from France. Under a bright sun and cloudless sky, before a crowd of 250,000, the most decorated African American combat unit to serve in World War I marched under the newly erected Victory Arch at 23rd Street and up Fifth Avenue. White observers were awed by the spectacle of some 3,000 black soldiers in French helmets, bayonets gleaming, parading in disciplined lockstep formation, while black residents flooded the streets and cheered wildly, welcoming home their loved ones and heroes. Capped by this extraordinary moment, the 369th was etched in history as the Harlem Hellfighters. The 369th is for World War I what the Massachusetts Volunteer 54th Infantry Regiment is to the Civil War, or the Tuskegee Airmen to World War II. Like those other famous servicemen, the Harlem Hellfighters stand as representatives of the larger African American struggle for equal rights and human dignity in their time, a theme persuasively captured in a new picture book by J. Patrick Lewis and Gary Kelley. Harlem Hellfighters joins a surge of books on the 369th appearing on the centennial of World War I. The men of the regiment, originally the New York 15th National Guard, proudly called themselves the Rattlers, as the title of Jeffrey Sammons and John Morrow’s scholarly Harlem’s Rattlers and the Great War attests. Yet the symbolic power of the name “Harlem Hellfighters” endures, reflected in the titles of a graphic novel by Max Brooks and Canaan White; another children’s book by the late Walter Dean Myers and Bill Miles, who died in 2013, that is being reissued; and Lewis and Kelley’s own contribution. The story of the 369th is so compelling because it is both representative and exceptional. Approximately 380,000 African Americans served in the segregated army during the war. A vast majority of black troops were denied the opportunity to fight, instead confined to labor battalions both in the United States and overseas. In December 1918, the 369th was shipped to France, where it initially seemed destined for a similar fate. Their fortunes changed when General John Pershing assigned them to the French Army, which welcomed any fresh soldiers, regardless of race. Challenging the view promulgated by racist military officials that African Americans played no significant role in the war, the 369th served for 191 consecutive days on the front lines, more than any other American regiment, never ceding an inch of ground to the Germans. Two of its soldiers, Henry Johnson and Neadom Roberts, were the first Americans to receive the French Croix de Guerre for valor on the battlefield. The 369th was also the first Allied regiment to reach the Rhine after the armistice and received a unit decoration from the French Army for its gallant service. The central figure of Lewis and Kelley’s Harlem Hellfighters is James Reese Europe, the acclaimed ragtime composer and conductor who led the 369th regimental band and took France by storm with a new, exciting, and soul-rousing sound that helped usher in the Jazz Age. Lewis tells the history of the 369th in free verse, invoking to great effect the syncopated rhythm that Europe and his band made famous.
Lewis’s poetics are perfectly complemented by Kelley’s evocative pastel illustrations, which both inspire and unsettle. The men are rendered with a stoic simplicity that conveys dignity and perseverance. Some images are chilling, such as a bespectacled president Woodrow Wilson scornfully glaring from the page, juxtaposed with the suspended bodies of two lynched black men. Kelley skillfully accentuates his dark palette with the occasional red, white, and blue of the American flag, serving to underscore the challenge the 369th faced in fighting for a country that failed to respect their citizenship and, all too often, their basic humanity. The U.S. entered the war, as Wilson proclaimed, to make the world “safe for democracy.” The 369th fought also to make American democracy safe for black people. On and off the battlefield, the Harlem Hellfighters, as Lewis appropriately writes, “defined courage.” That is why, after nearly a century, their legacy remains very much alive.

–Chad Williams, New York Times , 9/1/2014

Lyrical storytelling and haunting illustrations from the duo behind And the Soldiers Sang recount the achievements of the all-African-American 369th Infantry Regiment in WWI. Known as the Harlem Hellfighters, the 2,000-strong regiment was recruited with the help of “magnetic bandleader James Europe. … Even the tops of buses hosted Big Jim’s band, recruits hopping aboard to the irresistible tug of patriotism, ragtime, and jazz.” Panels in dark hues appear alongside Lewis’s free-verse poems, which feature titles like “Recruited in Song” and “Orders to Move.” These small poetic stories depict the Hellfighters’ journey to the French front, battles, and the racism back home. The often jarring images, with their shadows and angular lines, hit hard with poignancy. One spread intimates a ghost slave ship passing the Hellfighters’ troop transport ship over the Atlantic; chained slaves stare out from an eerie fog, their faces coming closer with each panel. Classic works of art inspire Kelley’s pastels (one softer scene features an upright piano in a field of impressionist red poppies). That these musicians turned soldiers didn’t give up their music strikes a hopeful tone in this powerful tale.

        –Publishers Weekly , 7/1/2014

This beautifully illustrated collection of free-verse poems introduces readers to the Harlem Hellfighters, a group of black American soldiers who fought in World War I, impressing the French with their courage and tenacity while also inspiring Europeans with their music, “a mix of primitive jazz, blues, and upbeat ragtime.” Despite the picture book format, the sophisticated writing style will be best understood by older readers. In addition, background knowledge is necessary to fully comprehend the poetry. For example, the poem “Somewhere” reads, “Somewhere / in the mid-Atlantic / fog of history, two / dark ships passed / in the night. …” The illustration shows a slave ship crossing paths with the soldiers’ vessel, but the slave trade itself is not mentioned anywhere in the text. The poems are of varying quality: some read more like expository text with some figurative language thrown in, while others feature strong imagery that will help readers visualize the sights and sounds of war. Kelley’s atmospheric, pastel illustrations in muted tones are a perfect match for the time period, documenting the violence of war in Europe and the horror of lynchings at home. Those who look closely may notice that the illustrator has referenced some other works of art that are detailed in the artist’s notes. Refer students who would like to know more about these brave soldiers to Walter Dean Myers’s The Harlem Hellfighters: When Pride Met Courage (HarperCollins, 2006). Lewis brings a stark poetic sensibility to his topic. His free verse captures the world the men left, a training camp in the South, a place of “deputy sheriffs certain that black was not any color of the rainbow.” In fourteen words he references the irony of black men being shipped across the Atlantic—“Somewhere in the mid-Atlantic fog of history, two dark ships passed in the night …”—while in Kelley’s atmospheric illustrations enslaved men in neck shackles appear out of the mist. In “The Tally,” Lewis lets the statistics speak for themselves, contrasting the bravery of the soldiers honored by the French (“Citations: the Croix de Guerre to 171 Hellfighters; the Medal of Honor to 1 officer [white]”), with their meager recognition at home. Through the whole tragic enterprise there is music, with ragtime as a recruitment tool, a jazz version of the “Marseillaise,” musician James Europe composing songs on a beat-up piano in an abandoned French farmhouse, and happy horns on Armistice Day. An introduction gives just enough background, and especially welcome artist’s notes point out how Kelley echoes images of Monet, Delacroix, and Renoir in his illustrations. The New York Times book review gives Harlem Hellfighters high praise: “Lewis’s poetics are perfectly complemented by Kelley’s evocative pastel illustrations, which both inspire and unsettle. The men are rendered with a stoic simplicity that conveys dignity and perseverance.” The book chronicles the achievements of the First World War’s all-African-American 369th Infantry, a 2,000-troop regiment recruited in New York and lead by famous band leader James Reese Europe. After training for combat in the South, bigotry kept them digging ditches and other grunt work. “The U.S. Army would not trust them to fight because they were black,” Kelley says. “The French said they wanted them, so the regiment was sent to France in 1917 and fought with great distinction in French uniforms. They took their ragtime piano with them to war.” German soldiers gave the unit their nickname because of their ferocity as fighters. The first Americans to reach the Rhine River, the Hellfighters and Sgt. Henry Johnson received the Croix de Guerre, one of France’s highest military medals. Given the nickname “Black Death” in combat, Johnson also was the first American soldier to be honored by the French. It wasn’t until 2003 that Johnson received the U.S. military’s Distinguished Service Cross. In August 2014, he was posthumously given the Medal of Honor for his actions under fire. “They came home to New York and a short but glorious reaction with a parade down Fifth Avenue, everyone lining the streets and cheering. Everyone thought it might be a turning point in race relations, but obviously it didn’t turn out that way,” Kelley explains.
Their success in battle paralleled the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the black regiment who fought for the Union during the American Civil War. Ironically, bandleader James Reese Europe was stabbed to death after an argument with his drummer the night before his band was scheduled to play at the Boston dedication for the 54th regiment monument. Kelley learned about the Hellfighters while researching World War I for And the Soldiers Sang, then pitched the idea to his publisher. Early stages on the project were “a little challenging” because Lewis initially wanted to write the story in verse.
“It’s difficult to match picture and narrative in verse, but I finally figured it out. By that time, the editor and publisher decided they wanted free verse or prose, so Pat had to start over. Then our editor died in the midst of the project, so the book is dedicated to him. In the end, though, the book turned out beautifully,” Kelley says. One of Creative Editions’ bestselling picture books, Harlem Hellfighters is in its third printing. Publishers Weekly said, “the remarkable narrative nonfiction rendering of WWI—and American—history uses free-verse poetry and captivating art to tell the century-old story of hellish combat, racist times, rare courage, and inspired music.” Kelley praises his publisher as “one of the last truly independent and adventurous publishers in the picture book genre.”

        –Melody Parker, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier , 11/1/2014

Just released from Creative Editions, this picture book tells the story of African American soldiers who fought in an all-black regiment in World War I, and which included among their ranks Henry Johnson, whom Theodore Roosevelt called “one of the five bravest soldiers” in the war. The book includes the history of the unit during and after the war, as well as giving details about some of the things going on back in the United States, such as the shameful lynchings of black men in the South, which went ignored by President Wilson for far too long. A mix of free verse and prose poems is paired with illustrations reminiscent of a graphic novel style, evocative as much as descriptive, as in the case of the spread on pages 12 and 13. The text reads, “Somewhere / in the mid-Atlantic / fog of history, two / dark ships passed / in the night …” The illustrations juxtapose the serviceman on the left, sailing toward France to defend his country, with a ghostly slave ship coming west, and it’s one of the most haunting series of images in the book, which is saying something.
The back matter in the book includes an eight-book bibliography, as well as five different artist’s notes, in which the artist credits other artists from whom he borrowed an image or idea. The book covers a lot of ground in only 32 pages and does it in a thoughtful, informative way. A real must for libraries everywhere, people interested in World War I history and/or African American history, and folks who love great poetry and great art.

–Kelly Fineman, Writing and Ruminating , 8/1/2014

Ages 10 - 16

Fiction, 32 pages, 2015

ISBN 978-1-56846-246-2

Known by many names in many languages, the polar bear remains one of the Arctic's signature species, and as this poem reminds readers, it is "far out on disappearing sea ice, losing hold" in a world affected by climate change.

Reviews

Modest in size, this brilliant book nonetheless captures the majesty of the polar bear. Lewis, a former children’s poet laureate, has the creature tell us what he’s called in different cultures, from the Inuit (“I am Nanuk”) to the Sami, who “refuse to speak my name for fear of offending me.” Nerlove’s shimmering illustrations hop effortlessly between styles of dress and the shades of white in the polar bear’s fur and habitat. The devastating ending shows the polar bear adrift on a shrinking bit of ice, “losing hold.” It’s wonderful to see a call for cross-cultural respect that also demonstrates, heartbreakingly, the interwoven lives of humans and an imposing yet utterly vulnerable species.

–Maria Russo, New York Times, 12/30/2019

Rather than simply providing general facts about polar bears, this book focuses on how these animals interact with various ethnic communities including Russians, Inuits, Eastern Greenlanders, and even Norsemen. Lewis mentions the various names that each group has bestowed upon the polar bears, such as “Sea Bear,” “the Ever-wandering One,” and “God’s Dog.” Mythology related to polar bears and the book’s featured cultures helps explain the names that the animals have been given. The text is lean yet utilizes strong imagery and poetic language such as “fount of fierceness” and “Norsemen, who wear imagination like a garment.” The artwork captures the characteristics of the bears’ icy environment, including the color scheme, and the polar bears are drawn with soulful eyes. Another is the stunning, imaginitive art by the renowned Italian illustrator Innocenti, who has also illustrated the Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol. Collodi, an Italian journalist (his real name was Carlo Lorenzini) first published Pincocchio, the story of a mischievous and misbehaving wooden puppet, in 1881. Carlo Collodi's original 1881 tale of the naughty, egotistical boy-puppet and his disastrous mishaps leaps to life via the rich illustrations of Roberto Innocenti, who himself should rank as an Italian national treasure. You can judge this book by its cover: The dust jacket predicts a bleak, wintry, Bruegelesque scene in which Pinocchio encounters a menacing pair of con artists, one a leering cat in overcoat and boots, the other a fox in fedora and open-fingered gloves (these baddies reappear inside the book as assassins disguised in caol sacks and brandishing shiny knives). This edition will likely douse any lingering affection children or their parents have for the Disney version of Pinocchio's escapades. In these pages, our hero doesn't skip about on jolly adventures with a talking cricket; he flattens the moralizing insect in a fit of pique. The Adventures of Pinocchio is the jagged sort of story that children love, full of violent and romantic adventure, of foolish braggadocio and wise authorial counsel. Loosely following Shakespearean and the occasional Petrarchan rhyme schemes, Yolen cleverly adopts personae of important figures in Dickinson's life–including the voice of the poet herself–to reveal key elements of her biography. Aiming to "tell the truth" of Dickinson's life, Yolen effectively conveys the importance of family and nature, privacy, imagination and independence in Dickinson's famously unconventional existence. Averse to traditional schooling and organized religion, the poet reveals: "I learned the spelling of the bee,/The mathematics of the rose/–/I found more in the books of air;/My higher education won/From every bird found flying there." Yolen also offers a sympathetic portrait of Dickinson's reclusiveness–"What need for me an open door/When in myself is so much more?"–and idiosyncratic dress: "sometimes a white dress is only that, / It keeps the daily choices few." Accompanying the sonnets, Kelley's dark and chunky pastels underscore Dickinson's interior life. Occasionally, attempts to echo Dickinson's poetic surprises yield muddled results, as in "Hedges," where Yolen's Dickinson depicts her shrubs as "My soldiers, steady in a row, / Their helmets verdigrised by God,/Wearing epaulettes of crow." Overall, though, these poems, illustrations and substantial notes combine well to lend a rounded portrait of this American poet every young reader needs to discover.

–Vicky Smith, Kirkus Reviews , November 2012

Yolen joins the throng of writers who have celebrated Emily Dickinson with this slim set of 15 sonnets devoted to facets of her life. The selections are constructed in various voices, each identified by the poem's title. In the first five pieces, Emily speaks of the family's brick house, her close relationship with her sister Vinnie, her schooling, her variance with her family's religious beliefs, and the companionship of her dog. The strict poetry pattern, page after page, becomes repetitiously rhythmic, and a few images have a puzzling fit within their poem. Some terms and phrases echo Dickinson's poems, and each sonnet is complemented by an endnote of related biographical information. The other speakers, Vinnie, an anonymous critic, author and mentor Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and Yolen herself along with later pieces by Emily Dickinson, go on to tell of her always dressing in white, her life as a recluse, and her work. Niece Mattie reveals a playful side in the poet's relationship with her brother's children. Kelley's somber, full-page paintings reflect Emily's references to the grim mien of the Dickinson parents and also offer a sense of the poet's contemplative life. Yolen's personal tribute is framed in two concluding poems, a sonnet on Emily Dickinson's still-standing house, and a brief parting poem. We hear the "voices" of Emily, her sister Vinnie, her niece Mattie, her friend Thomas, an unknown critic, and Jane Yolen herself. The tale begins with Emily telling us how "cold as winter's core" her mother was and how close Emily was to her older brother and her younger sister. Both her brother, who "strove so hard my life to save / From drowning in that icy wave," and her sister seemed to recognize Emily's sensitive personlity. From Vinnie we hear about how Emily scribbles poetry on "chance slips" of paper. In these poems, "Her perceptions all drawn line by line," Emily reveals little parts of herself, but she does not choose to share them with the world. To Emily's niece Mattie, Emily is "Like Queen Mab who endless reigns, / Upon the hillside." She is a magical being who is neither an adult nor a child. Emily is the one who spends time with Mattie and the other children, who gives them treats and takes their side. Vinnie is the one who, when Emily is gone, finds Emily's poems and decides that they must be saved and "published for the ages." Adults and children alike will be moved by the power and beauty in these poems. Jane Yolen captures how Emily felt about her own life, and how others felt about her and her incredible gift. We see how Emily chose to live a quiet life without a husband or children, and how much she was loved and admired by those who knew her. We also appreciate why, to so many, her words are a gift, "a fine embrace." At the back of the book Jane Yolen provides her readers with further information about Emily Dickinson's life, her work, and her legacy.

–Marya Jansen-Gruber, Through the Looking Glass , November 2012

Ages 11 - 18

Fiction, 40 pages, 2013

ISBN 978-1-56846-215-8

In the northeastern region known as the Great North Woods, day dawns with quivering aspens, waters teem with life, forests prowl with predators, and nature is celebrated in rhyme.

    Reviews

Budding naturalists will find much to pore over in this attractive picture book. The book is divided into five sections describing the varying habitats of this territory at different times of the day. The paintings provide a minutely observed and scientifically accurate view of the widely varying ecosystems and habitats of both familiar and less well-known species: fish including longnose gar, walleye, and bullhead; mammals including moose, bobcat, star-nosed mole, porcupine, and flying squirrel; birds including owl, raven, and grouse; and trees and plants such as the pitcher plant. The text is composed of couplets and quatrains of occasionally awkward rhyming verse, which sometimes disconcertingly describes animals and events not pictured. Small italicized headings helpfull identify the species featured on each page, although a larger, roman typeface would have aided legibility, and a straightforward prose narrative would better complement the detailed scientific illustrations. In spite of textual shortcomings, this book provides a worthy introduction to an awe-inspiring geographic area that will be unfamiliar to many and may encourage some to get outside and enjoy the woods.

–Vicky Smith, Kirkus Reviews , 8/1/2016

This lyrical introduction to the Great North Woods begins at dawn and continues into night. Rhyming poetry invites readers into the environment, where "aspens quiver." Word selection and art work together, evoking movement while identifying characteristics of flora and fauna. For instance, wolves have "bristling fur and panting mouths" as they trot south, the intent look on their faces indicating they are stalking prey. Many of the acrylic paintings are featured in full spreads, the palette shifting from warm, bright hues to cool tones as the day cedes to dusk. The nocturnal scenes are particularly eye-catching, capturing a rare tonal quality of night while providing enough light to view the dynamics of nighttime critters. Although this title is geared toward a younger audience, Heinz doesn't shy away from the reality of nature and uses alliteration to accentuate those moments, for example, "crayfish crunch" for a raccoon's late-night snack. Italicized text, offset in minuscule labels, offers minimal description of some of the wildlife on each page but not enough for true informational purposes. Clearly meant as a general introduction to a boreal forest, this is a work to savor for its lavish art and enticing verse. A stirring informational picture book for sharing aloud, this is especially a winner for libraries surrounding the Great Lakes and in the northeastern United States up through Quebec.

–Rachel Zuffa, School Library Journal , 9/1/2016

It is dawn in the north woods, and the sun is beginning to warm the ground, the plants, and the animals. Bumblebees get to work collecting nectar, a bobcat grooms its fur as it lies in its lair, and the great gray owl folds its banded wings. Water plays a big role in the north woods, where there are lakes and ponds everywhere. Here loons "trill," herons "stab" at polliwogs and other creatures, and ducks "tip their bottoms" up into the air as they search for food underwater. Under the surface, all kinds of animals swim around, and the fish, in particular gar, walleyes, salmon, and trout, bring anglers to the region "from near and far." Among the trees in the forests, a pack of wolves is on the move. A young moose hears the clan "on the hunt," and he takes refuge in a lake, turning to face his foes with his small rack at the ready. At night, the sun-dappled ground is replaced by moon shadows, and raccoons, voles, owls, moles, deer, and foxes are out and about. Predators seek and prey hide. In this stunning book, a luscious, rhyming text is paired with beautiful, annotated artwork to give young readers a taste of what a north woods environment is like. The book opens vertically on a pretty blue songbird, and more sections of the sturdy, blooming potted plant it’s perched on unfurl with each consecutive flap turn. As the book extends, readers see more of the tall shrub with its flowering blossoms and then a bright collection of daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips planted around its base. Readers will enjoy spotting small treasures among the foliage: a nest filled with tiny eggs, a grinning caterpillar, a clothed mouse and fairy, tiny and hard at work on the next-to-last flap (where a tiny line of ants crawls up the side of a terra-cotta pot). Watercolor-and-pencil illustrations are whimsical, with the joyful florals capturing center stage, like a boisterous explosion of spring. Before each flap unfolds, readers see spare text decorated with nature-inspired vignettes that announces what is changing in the garden BUT with a bit of flair: “Flowers unfurl, calling butterflies to land.” Although charming, it’s challenging to read—as the book lengthens, it’s increasingly difficult to hold with a child in one’s lap. The book comes with a small hole punched at the top, allowing the book to be hung so that it might function as either book or decor; spread out, it could be ideal for little ones to crawl upon. In one spread, the swimmer has jellyfish-like transparency that reflects filtered twilight; in another, the swimmer is a black silhouette exploring deeper, darker waters. The eerily compelling combination of artistic techniques conveys the mystery and wonder of backlit, murky ocean depths. The dynamic and deft visuals mix the fluorescence of black light posters, the childish appeal of black paint and crayon scratch art, and the ethereal power of stained glass. Varying perspectives range from close-ups of the coral-laden ocean floor to a sperm whale spouting water far overhead on distant waves. When the young swimmer gets too close to "the leaden-eyed shark...the hairy sea-leopard, and the sting-ray," the art makes clear the "passions there, wars, pursuits, tribes, sight in those ocean-depths." Tensions rise amid the aggressive creatures until a fantastical sea serpent sweeps up the young swimmer for a safe return "to the subtle air breathed by beings like us who walk this sphere." Lovely inspiration for artists and ocean-lovers of all ages.

–Children's Literature, September 2021

Whitman’s poem is set to a lush and stunning illustrated world. While the language of Whitman’s 1860 poem may not be as accessible to children as some other picture-book choices, artist Carroll’s illustrations more than compensate. Each line of the poem is illustrated by one or two double-page spreads that both depict the text literally and also convey the mystery and wonder of the natural world that is at the heart of Whitman’s text. Carroll employs varied techniques from one spread to the next: the nebulous forms and blended hues of wet watercolor that depict the bottom of the sea, jellyfish composed of lines so fine they glow electric, an entire ocean patterned with fine swirls reminiscent of Peter Sís’ work. Yet every illustration shares the same haunting eeriness of the deep ocean, a nighttime palette punctuated with explosions of color here or a landscape of colors there. A pale-skinned human child gives the pages a subtle story to follow, diving from a boat to swim the depths alongside existent animals and fantastical creatures alike, then returning to “the subtle air breathed by beings like us who walk this sphere.” A dog watches anxiously from the vessel, ears flapping as the child reemerges, borne up by a sea serpent’s tail. A challenging text made visually and viscerally wondrous. The prepositions (i.e. in, on, off into, below, above, near) indicate where the animals are hiding and these words are featured in dark orange font. Children who enjoy this book may also like to experience the author’s earlier book, Fox’s Box.

-Children's Literature, January 2022

A poetic personification of the winter season, Mother Winter goes walking "on the longest cold night," inviting the reader along to experience chill winds, icy ponds, white snowdrifts, and other quiet wonders.

Ages 9 - 12

Fiction, 16 pages, 2022

ISBN 9781568463773

2023 Notable Children’s Poetry Book Award Recipient

Watch a video interview with Carroll.

This poetic board book takes a puddle’s point of view, calling children to delight in their senses.

Ages 2 - 5

Fiction, 14 pages, 2023

ISBN 9781568463834

Bank Street Best Books of the Year Under 5 List (2024)

Watch the book trailer.

Download an activity.

Nonsense!
