Reviews

The illustrated “Super Bowl Champions” series provides elementary-aged readers with an introduction to some of the most successful and storied professional football teams ever to play in the National Football League (NFL). Each volume in this series provides readers with background information about the history of a championship team, some of the franchise’s greatest players, and how they were able to capture perhaps the most coveted championship trophy in the pantheon of North American professional sports. This volume in the series focuses on the New York Giants, a franchise with quite a history. Established in 1925, this fledgling NFL team played their first few seasons in the Polo Grounds, home of the very successful New York Giants of Major League Baseball’s National League. Hoping to have some of the aura of the baseball Giants rub off on them, the new NFL team took on the same name. The football Giants won several championships in the first two decades of the team’s existence and was a powerhouse in the 1950s and early 60s. In 1956, the Giants won the NFL championship; from that year until 1963, the team played in five other league title games, although they lost all of them. With the addition of superstar linebacker Lawrence Taylor in the 1980s, the Giants once again returned to excellence. Led by Taylor and a ferocious defense, the Giants won Super Bowls in January of 1987 and 1991. Then, after the arrival of quarterback Eli Manning, the Giants won two upset Super Bowl victories over the powerful New England Patriots in February of 2008 and 2012. The Giants also appeared in the Super Bowl in 2001, although they lost to the Baltimore Ravens. Over the years, players such as Frank Gifford, Y.A. Tittle, Charlie Conerly, Sam Huff, Tiki Barber, Phil Simms, and Michael Strahan have worn the blue jersey of the New York Giants. While recent years have not been kind to either Giant players or their fans, the team still has a magical history that includes four Super Bowl championships. The story of the New York Giants is well represented in this introductory sports history book. Readers who enjoy sports, and NFL football in particular, will be both entertained and informed by this book.
