Midwest Book Review, 01/17/2024

Mix A Pancake by Christina Rossetti & illustrated by Monique Felix. Mix A Pancake was written by Christina Rossetti in 1893 and has been given new life by the very talented Monique Felix. With fourteen pages of enthusiastic-looking kittens, Mix A Pancake humorously illustrates all of the potential outcomes when it comes to letting little ones become Chef de Cuisine without any supervision. Like all board books published by The Creative Company, I could read this one over and over again. Thankfully, the kitten chaos and pancake mess stays in the book, which for parents, is the best part.

–Kelsie Marie Paff, Where the Board Books Are, 01/17/2024

The cover of this board book features a cute kitten wearing a chef's hat and a white jacket holding a recipe for pancakes. The first spread shows this kitten leading a parade of kittens carrying the necessary ingredients and utensils. From there on chaos reigns. Eggs break on the floor, milk spills from the table; flour dusts the room. Mice scamper in, scaring the kittens who jump on tables and chairs. The chef kitten pours batter in a pan on the stove while the other kittens cause havoc in the kitchen. Then pancakes are flying around as the chef flips them from the pan and the other kittens try to catch them. At this point, an adult cat appears in the doorway and observes the hectic scene. The illustrations cover the pages in exuberant activity. The kittens are dressed in aprons or trousers. The adult cat wears a sleeveless dress, high heel shoes, and pearls.
